If you were anyone else, the VMAs were a beautiful festival of awkwardness. The single most awkward interaction of the night — which is saying something, since this is the same night that saw Jonah Hill go off on a very, very long almost-rant about people who are angry that he lost weight — undoubtedly came during the presentation of the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award to Britney Spears.
On paper, it probably looked great: Lady Gaga, the pop diva du jour , presenting an achievement award to Britney Spears, the pop diva du decade. But Gaga was still in drag, and Spears seemed a bit flustered by the whole event.
Intriguingly, this was the first time Spears attended the VMAs since For a second, it seemed like Britney and Gaga were going to kiss, thus continuing the cycle begun when Madonna smooched Britney in Readers, what did you think of the show? These soldiers that are with me today have all been discharged from the air force or the army, or opted to leave on their own.

And the most inspiring thing about having them here with me today is that we can spread the message of what the organization is all about, because we really need to get Reed to set a date in the Senate to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Fan voting began on July 30 and ended on August The show was dedicated to Chadwick Boseman, who died of colon cancer two days before the ceremony. The awards were originally scheduled to be held at Barclays Center for the first time since Due to the COVID pandemic, the event was expected to be held with "limited or no audience", as one of the first major indoor events to be held in the city since the onset of the pandemic in the state, with MTV also announcing plans for the show to "[span] all five boroughs" to "pay homage to the strength, spirit and incredible resilience of NYC and its beloved residents".
