There's no better example of this than the various multi-colored ninjas in the series. Though they may look like icons like Sub-Zero and Scorpion, these are entirely separately characters with vastly different elemental powers.
One incredibly esoteric palette swap character is Hydro. Hydro looks a lot like Sub-Zero combined with Scorpion, but despite this interesting design, he's remained a relatively unknown part of the franchise since debuting in 's Mortal Kokmbat: Blood and Thunder 1, by Charles Marshall, Patrick Rolo, Bobby Rae and Dave Lanphear. This insignificance has kept him from ever being a playable character in the games, which is unlikely to change anytime soon.
Hydro's debuted in Malibu Comics' short-lived line of Mortal Kombat comics in the '90s. His costume was very similar to Sub-Zero's, although it was a darker shade of blue and lacked the black in Sub-Zero's costume. Fittingly, his powers were also very similar to Sub-Zero's, though his element was water instead of ice. Despite this, his water could be turned cold instantly freeze an opponent like Sub-Zero's powers, making Bi Han a bit redundant.
Perhaps for this exact reason, he only appeared in a few issues of the series. In Mortal Kombat: Legacy , Hydro is portrayed as an earlier version of the cybernetic ninja program, unit LK1V1 , and is pitted against Cyrax and Sektor to demonstrate their superior abilities. This version of Hydro displays similar skills to other Lin Kuei cyborgs , such as conducting electricity around his arms and fists to increase the damage of his attacks. Hydro showed to have the upper hand against both Cyrax and Sektor at the beginning, but ultimately, Hydro was bested by both cyborgs due to Sektor holding Hydro's arm from behind and allowing Cyrax to have a clean first shot then Sektor joining in, allowing Cyrax to perform a Fatality.

His training allowed Hydro to become a master over the element of water and he became a noted swordsman as well. During these events Hydro was slaughtered by the Netherealm spectre Scorpion in his vengence against Sub-Zero for killing him and against the Lin Kuei for the massacre of his family and clan.
Hydro was considered to be one of the Lin Kuei's top assassins, He possessed advanced martial art skills and could hold his own against most opponents. He was an avid swordsman and carried at least two katana across his back indicting a possible Japanese origin. His main power came in the manipulation over water. Hydro could shoot water at his foes with enough force to knock them back, or make the water cold enough to freeze them in place similar to Sub-Zero's own power.
Hydro could even shoot boiling water to scald his enemies. Mortal Kombat Legacy: Hydro makes his first on screen appearance in the web series 9th episode. In this setting he has been turned into an early version Lin Kuei cyborg, unit LK 1V1, just like the more advanced units of Sektor and Cyrax.
He is pitted against both Sektor and Cyrax in a training fight to see how their new programing stands up. At first Hydro seems to have the upper hand in the fight until Cyrax and Sektor start to work together and force Hydro to go offline Cyrax then uses a tri point wrist blade to slice Hydro's neck and then flip kick the cyborgs head off proving their superiority. As a cyborg Hydro does not showcase his water control powers though he does feature an extensive martial art list as well as the usual superhuman strength, speed, and cordination along with an electrical powerup ability.
