Mayfield Dairy was founded in Athens, Tennessee, in and functioned as a family business until Dean Foods purchased the business in Since then, Dean Foods has continued to sell Mayfield Dairy products regionally, including milk and ice cream. At the end of February, Dean Foods gave notices to dozens of dairy farmers across the country that their contracts with the company would terminate on May Farms without someone to take over the contract, like the Watson Dairy Farm in Sweetwater, were shut down. Mayfield Dairy currently employs around people in Athens and continues to receive milk from 45 dairy farms and co-ops in Tennessee.
Mayfield Dairy advises milk lovers to reach out to their local Walmart store managers to share their disapproval of the removal. And although times have changed, our approach remains the same.
